I Have A Lump
in My Testicle, What should I do?
The first thing
to do is to have your testicle checked by your GP. Remember that
most lumps are entirely benign. Even at the hospital only approximately
1 in 30 or so patients who have a lump turn out to have testicular
cancer. That is after GPs have already reassured a large number of
patients.
What Will My
GP Do If He or She is Worried?
Your GP will refer
you to the hospital. Usually you will be seen within 2 weeks. If
the GP is especially certain that you do not have cancer you may
have to wait for a routine appointment. This is likely to be months.
What Happens
at the Hospital?
You will be seen
by one of the urology doctors. These are surgeons who specialise
in diseases of the urinary and reproductive system (kidneys, bladder,
prostate etc.). They will decide whether or not your lump is cancerous.
Will I Need
to Have Any Tests?
In order to aid
the diagnosis you doctor may organise for you to have an ultrasound
scan of your testicle. This is the same test that pregnant women
have to check the unborn baby. It enables the doctors to see what
the tissues look like under the skin. It is able to tell the difference
between non cancerous abnormalities and changes highly suspicious
of being cancer.
